"Lovin' it when God's plan comes together ..."

The first component of Zim Team 2012 arrived safely via Addis Ababa and emerged onto the parking lot beneath the hot Zimbabwe sun to begin what we all know will be a series of "God moment" discoveries.

The team has been in Zimbabwe for a day and a half, but already the evidence of Providential superintending is there.

ANESU's resident Heuglins Robin is greeting the early morning as I write this. As one of the team members said yesterday, the day begins with an overture that swells into a symphony.

My Heuglins Robin friend began the overture a little while ago as dawn began to break just beyond the majestic palm tree just outside the bedroom window, and now the symphony is in full swing.

The birds say it well. You see, "the Heavens declare the glory of God. The earth shows forth His handy work. Day after day pours forth speech, and night after night reveals knowledge."

A Shona congregation we were a part of yesterday said it well too, as the rented room in which it met filled with the praises of simple, sincere and transparent hearts.

I write this in the early morning cool, on this first day of the first week of ZimTeam 2012's time with us. The breaking dawn has painted the Eastern skyline gold. The dawn has lit up the underbellies of puffy rainy season clouds. The distant clouds form the first rank of a battalion that stands above to attention in ranks against a wonderfully clear blue sky.

Today will find us making our way West out of the capital city of Harare to a simple campground where more simple, sincere and transparent hearts will gather in the persons of TEAM Zimbabwe's missionary task force. Bob Myers, the leader of Zim Team 2012 is geared up and ready to go with words of exhortation and encouragement from God's Word. Matt Toll will be superintending the refreshment that comes to weary, worn workers every time they are ushered into the presence of God to praise, then worship Him in simple faith. Bob's daughter, Hannah, will be taking the missionaries' children under her gentle wing, allowing their parents to give themselves completely to what's in store for them while, at the same time, building eternal values into their children's young lives.

ANESU has only one requirement of visiting teams; that they have a right heart.

Every member of Zim Team 2012 has provided evidence in the few hours they've been with us of having met that requirement in full.

Could it have only been twelve months ago that the first team to visit ANESU arrived from New Jersey? So much has been accomplished is such a brief period of time. This team follows in the steps of that with involvement in ministry to those doing ministry, followed by face-to-face engagement with Zimbabwe's people at a number of levels.

The team from New Jersey left me with a heart that was deeply grateful ... a gratitude that has grown steadily since.

Each team that comes to Zimbabwe to see, then discern where and how they can contribute to what God is doing here give expression to the powerful impact that is made on them by the people they meet, the situations they're exposed to, and the experiences they have. Twin truth to that lies in the fact that they too, impact us and those who meet them here in powerfully positive ways.

Zim Team 2012's real work will begin a week from now, as the remaining four members arrive to embark on a busy itinerary of discovery and the laying of relational foundations of ministry opportunity alongside Zimbabweans responding to the needs of people infected, affected and at risk by HIV/AIDS.

As jet lag nudged me awake from time to time in the course of the night gone by, I revelled in the luxury of hope. Hope, today, will be my theme.

There is eternal hope in the face of human hopelessness ... hope that comes through a special kind of faith. That faith is very much in evidence today.

I love it when God's plan comes together.

As I write this, the first three members of Zim TEAM 2011 from Covenant Church in Doylestown PA are in the air and on their way to join ANESU for a two-week vision trip.

Please pray with us for travelling mercies, for a safe arrival, that all their luggage arrives with them, and that their time with us here will be enriching to everyone involved. May it all redound to God's eternal glory.

Hello friends ...

Eight weeks on the road, living out of suitcases and staying in generous people's homes, tends to put a kink in one's best intentions to maintain regular reporting. Our days have been very full ... and very fulfilling.

We're grateful ... so very grateful for the expressions of love we've received from friends along the way.

We've been back at base for a little while now, but we've continued to run hard to care for the many things that have needed attention before we can turn our attention back to Zimbabwe.

I write this from a Motel room in Calgary, after a great meeting with friends in Lethbridge, Alberta this afternoon. I flew in from Abbotsford early this morning, and fly back in the morning. Only one more trip to go once I get back to base ... this time a road trip up and over the snowy Rockies ... before I can finally pause, take a few deep breaths and enjoy family for the brief time we'll have together over the Christmas season.

Mandy's been doing good justice to the kinds of things I can't stand ... like paper work and bookkeeping ... ugh! She does such a great job, and I'm thankful to be able to entrust it all to her.

It's going to be great to stop ... even if for a brief moment or two.

May you and yours be blessed as you give attention to the wonderful dynamics of family and friends this season.

Thanks for remembering us and the rest of the ANESU team as we embark on another year's adventure in Zimbabwe!

"In Celebration of The Children ..."

After a brief but very fulfilling time in North America, Bud and Mandy Jackson ... project directors of ANESU ... will be returning, before the end of the year, to their responsibilities in Zimbabwe .

It's comforting to know that they are not alone in their endeavour, but represent an army of people committed to the vision of ANESU.

This clip is dedicated to the children. A few of them depicted here are sons and daughters of committed pastors and foster home care givers, but the majority are children without one or both parents due to AIDS.

It's comforting to know that many of ANESU's North American partners have come to know the names and stories of many of these children. It's even more comforting to know that ANESU's partners regularly lift these children up before the throne of grace in prayer.

"Reason to Gather Concert"

South Ridge Community Church hosted the "Reason to Gather" tour featuring Sara Groves, Audrey Assad and Jenny and Tyler ... all humble, dedicated servants of God. The concert was both deeply moving and phenomenal on a number of levels.

Much thanks is due Steve Sargent and his band of volunteers for their hard work and dedication in doing wonderful justice to the exercise. The concert was held for the benefit of what God is doing in Zimbabwe through ANESU. Here are a few visuals for the benefit of those who weren't able to attend ... and a wonderful video clip, prepared by Ben Stapley, that was shown. The clip is an eloquent expression of the heart of what God is doing through ANESU and her partners in Zimbabwe.

It is a privilege to be in the forefront of an initiative that began as ANESU in January this year (2011), but was a couple of years in the making through a season of much prayer and deliberation on the part of TEAM leadership in North America and Zimbabwe.

"September 2011 ANESU status Report"

The first Zimbabwe component of the first year of the outworking of the ANESU vision is coming to a close.

The first North American component of the global strategy is about to begin with our return to Vancouver, and on to attend a benefit concert hosted by South Ridge Community Church in Clinton, New Jersey, and to participate in an itinerary that will introduce us to other vital ministries in the region.

We've arrived at something of a milestone in the forward progress of ANESU, and it is with gratitude to our partners in North America and Zimbabwe that we offer this status report.

How can a person put into the words what it's like to watch the birth of a strategic church-to-church partnership? How does one articulate the joy of seeing two churches from opposite sides of the globe come together in common cause to demonstrate Christ's compassion to the hurting and wounded ... to people impacted by HIV/AIDS?

It was a joy to receive the team of five from South Ridge Community Church, and to spend an amazing week with them ... seeing them engage relationally, and respond with open hearts to a variety of new things.

In a day and age where so much "help" from the Western world does so much damage to the very people it seeks to help, ANESU is grateful to be able to broker the right kind of connection in the right kind of way with the right kind of partners on both sides of the ocean. The blessing that results flows both ways.

"Truth or Dare" Youth Conference ...

Dare2serve, ANESU’s most recently added ministry partner in Zimbabwe, has called young people in Zimbabwe to come together for a Truth or Dare conference this month.

The young people who lead Dare2serve believe that there is a generation that is ready to take on the difficult things that other generations before them have not been brave enough to tackle.

The conference will introduce teenagers and young adults to the Zimbabwe they don’t see everyday ... the Zimbabwe that is in desperate need of something real and that is crying out for their brothers and sisters to stand with them through hard times and lend them a hand. The street children, the orphans, the forgotten older generation and the people that are trying to clean up the sunshine city one street corner at a time.

The Truth or Dare conference is going to be structured and broken down into three easy sections. Each morning of the conference will be taken up by carefully focused training sessions. Each afternoon will be spent doing different community outreaches at orphanages and other projects that Dare2serve is involved in. Each evening will feature a special no entrance fee gathering at 7arts Theater.

On the last afternoon of the conference Dare2serve will lead youth in taking part in a huge clean up of the Avondale and Second Street Extension area with Miracle Missions. They will pick up trash, wash down dirty walls and paint some of the walls of some of the buildings in that area.

The conference will run from the night of the 17^th of August and will close with a concert on the night of the 19^th of August.

Dare2serve has embraced a vision to expose the youth of Zimbabwe to God’s compassionate heart. They have determined to introduce Zimbabwean youth to a host of opportunities to serve the community … challenges to Christ-like response that they can take back to their schools and churches.

Please pray for Ron Chifokoyo and his team as they lead this conference. Pray for the young people who will be attending. Pray that many lives will be impacted in a way that will not only bring personal transformation but will result in the transformation of Zimbabwe’s marginalized and disadvantaged people

We are looking forward to a return visit to Zimbabwe by representatives of the South Ridge Community Church.

This church family has responded proactively to a challenge to sensitive, meaningful, and sound participation with ANESU in HIV/AIDS-related ministry. The South Ridge church family is embarking on a relationally driven strategic partnership, together with Hands of Hope, with Hope Valley Assembly in Harare, Zimbabwe.

ANESU exists:

Steve and Anthea recently completed Phase Two of their preparation process with TEAM, and are now in the third and final phase of the process that will see their arrival in Zimbabwe to join the ANESU team.

We include here the Love family's most recent up-date with a sincere request that you join us in praying for them as they take this next significant step of faith.

Steve and Anthea, may each day be a process of discovery of confirming indicators that you are moving forward in step with God's design for your life. As you find daily confirmation, and as you keep your eyes fixed on the goal set before you, remember that you serve a God of the process, not just of the destination. He is at "... work in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure." We concur with the direction of the journey you have undertaken, and are walking with you each step of the way.

With deep gratitude to our God, and to the faithful partners who have enabled us to embrace this great vision, we offer this progress report.

The first steps have been taken, many more steps lie before us. The challenge seems insurmountable, but the words of a childhood song come back, bringing hope and encouragement, because we have a deep settled sense that this is of God. Charles Wesley wrote, "Faith, mighty faith, the promise sees and looks to God alone. Laughs at impossibilities and cries, 'It shall be done'!"

As you pause to give thanks, we invite to to pray for ANESU, and for the work that God is doing through Zimbabwean people of great faith and courage who are rising to the challenge of compassionate ministry to the less fortunate than they. This is Christ at work through the agency of His faithful people.

William's Story

More Than Just Food

If you ever visit Bud and Mandy, you will have opportunities to interact with many great ministries. During these times, the Lord will give you the opportunity to feel part of the mission in Zimbabwe - not as an observer but as a participant. Today, Sarah Gustafson from East Troy Bible Church shares her experience and her observations on one such adventure.

During our trip we visited a number of feeding stations. A feeding station is a place where children go after school to receive a hot meal. For most children in high density neighborhoods, this is their only meal. These children come from a variety of homes. Some homes still have parents in the home. Others come from homes led by grandparents. Still others come from child headed homes. Further, these children have basic nutrition and health issues - complicated with HIV/AIDS.

These Feeding Stations are ministries of churches and run 7 days a week. They are staffed with volunteers who faithfully prepare the meals each afternoon. Coupled with the feeding program, the churches meet with the children, sing, learn Bible lessons, and provide basic encouragement.

On Monday, March 23 we visited the Highfield Feeding Station run by the Highfield church of the Nazarene. The Feeding Station is overseen by Pastor Stephen Mutatu. Pastor Mutatu also helps run the Philadelphia Orphan Homes and the Goshen Farm Orphan Home and Sustainability Project. Olen will write about these later.

As we drove up to the church, kids appeared from everywhere. The kids seemed so happy to see us, yet my heart was breaking for them. I knew that for most of them this would be their only meal of the day. Probably, it would be the only time during the day that they would feel safe.

I was able to interact with some boys who were playing checkers. Like all boys, they were proud to announce who was winning. After playing with the kids for awhile we went and met the cooks. They were preparing the daily meal to feed 150 + children. On Sunday, they prepare a meal for over 200 children. The ladies were so grateful to the Lord to be able to help.

Karen, Jessie and I were blessed to be able to serve the children their meal of sadza and chicken gravy sauce. Sadza is a thick porridge made from maize... a little bit like grits. It is very filling. It can be eaten with the fingers and used to dip into the gravy sauce and greens. Each child washed their hands, prayed and waited patiently to be served. After the children finished they rinsed their plates and cups and brought them back to the ladies. What blessing to come along side these women and help them for an evening.

One reason that this program is so valuable is that Highfield can keep track of local children. The church calls roll each day, and if a child is missing they try to find out why. The church visits the home, checks on health issues and encourages the children in their homework. Feeding is done at night so that the children can sleep with a full tummy.

After the meal they gather in the Chapel for a time of singing and Bible stories. The Feeding Station not only feeds their tummies but also their souls. Praise the Lord for these wonderful people who take care of God’s little angels.

Not Too Young - Dare2Serve

Recently, Bud Jackson started building a relationship with a young man named Rob Chifhokoyo. Rob is around 28 years old and has taken it upon himself to live out the words of Christ. In the future, Bud and Rob will have many opportunities to work together. Below is the first impression of this new ministry initiative written by two of East Troy Bible Church's team members.

What would you think if you saw a group of 15-20 students hanging around a street corner or walking the streets at night talking to prostitutes? Would you immediately think - "hey look at those people hanging out! I'll bet they are talking about Jesus Christ."

Well, take another look! Rob Chifhokoyo heads up a grass roots ministry called Dare 2 Serve in Harare. Rob had left Zimbabwe to pursue his dreams in America, but while he was there he felt convicted to return to his home and become a difference maker. The Lord placed a burden on Rob's heart to share the compassion and truth of Christ to the forgotten people of the streets, nursing homes and orphan homes.

Every Saturday, Rob sends out a text to friends and students for a new project. They gather for prayer and then head out to one of four different locations. They rotate through a street vending situation, nursing homes, and orphanages. Often these homes are run by the state and aren't connected to a local church. So Rob's group interacts with the residents and pray.

On Saturday, March 26th we met with Rob's team in a parking lot for prayer. They made a decision to drop off some Bibles to the street vendors. Just the week before, these vendors had responded to the gospel. Twenty of them received Christ. Then our group met Rob and the group at the Rose of Sharon Orphan Home. The Dare 2 Serve group played games, sang, brought supplies, talked about Christ and prayed for the children.

These young people are so similar to American students. They like the same music, study the same subjects and have a desire for a deeper purpose. They are difference makers. Some of their friends wonder why they spend their Saturday afternoons out in the streets or the forgotten homes, but for these students, ministry is worth living for. They have decided to take up the call of Christ themselves and not wait for others to serve. They have Dared 2 Serve!

Pray for these students who are making a huge impact. Then ask yourself, "what can I do in my neighborhood?"

One Good Hot Meal

Recently we visited the Rugare Children's Home and Feeding Station. It is one of the many Hands of Hope projects in Zimbabwe. Today's entry are the thoughts of Dave Nelson from East Troy Bible Church who experienced the joy and the difficulties of this amazing place.

On Tuesday, March 22nd we went to the Rugare Children’s home. Rugare is in a high density population area. The Children’s home shared the grounds of the Hope Valley Assembly Church. Pastor Henry Zihove ministers to the congregation and lives on the grounds with his own children and about 6 others. Rugare is also a feeding station where local children come to get a hot meal every day. For some it might be there only meal of the day.

When we arrived, I would guess there were about 25 to 30 children who had just finished eating, and were rinsing their dishes. Most of them were wearing school uniforms. One of the care givers explained to me, the children not wearing uniforms did not go to school, probably because they could not afford it.

Two things struck me within minutes of arriving at the home. One was the level of poverty. There was no grass yard or swing. It was dirt and weeds. The one room house that the pastor and his family share with the orphans, at one time housed 15 people. The second thing that struck me was the children. Though they were dirty and their clothes worn, their faces were full of life. Their eyes lit up when they smiled, which was often. The ladies in our group had the children singing and dancing within minutes of our arrival. If you closed your eyes and didn’t notice the African accent, it was easy to imagine yourself at VBS in the States.

Though the level of poverty and the condition of the grounds were disturbing to me, the smiles on their faces and the sounds of their singing reassured me of God’s presence. I will continue to pray for Pastor Henry and his wife as they bring Hope and the Word of God to these precious children.

It has been a pleasure to be bringing information your way in terms of what we see God doing in Zimbabwe in the area of HIV/AIDS response. In the last three months, we were privileged to have three teams of individuals visit us and see what we're seeing on a daily basis.

A major component of these visits has been the long term view of partnership we're entering into with local gatherings of Christ followers in the United States and Canada. As friends from these groups have spent time with us, we have applied ourselves together to the dynamic of discerning where, how and when to engage. That exercise is on-going.

I have also extended an invitation to representatives from these groups of friends to contribute to this Blog. I'd like for their unedited view to be available to those of you who are prayerfully following, and contributing toward, what we're doing here in Zimbabwe.

Many thanks to pastor Ron Christiansen, and members of the ZimPact2011 team who have contributed, for their excellent posts (except for the picture of me, of course!). I trust these will be on-going, and that others from other groups will feel comfortable to do the same.

As we continue to move forward, the picture of what we've been drawn here for is becoming more and more clear.

Without doubt, who we (the ANESU Partnership) are and what we do is going to be governed by the following rules of engagement:

He is Faithful - A New Godly Generation

Today's story is about how the ANESU Partnership is working shoulder to shoulder with Zimbabwean Christians to reach a new generation with hope and Christ.

It is one thing to read the Bible and it is another thing altogether to do what it says. The Scripture says that we are not just to be hearers of the Word but doers of the Word.

On one of our excursions was into the Cranborne community in Harare to Cranborne Community Church. We had a meeting in a pastor's home. On the surface, the property was very nice. It had beautiful gardens and trees. Beside the house was a large 25x15 foot porch in the middle of the yard covered with a thatched roof.

Under this roof, seven young Zimbabweans had gathered. They were young people in their late teens and early twenties. They had gathered to tell us about their lives. All of them had been orphaned or abandoned. The pastor had given his wife, Pavensi, permission to bring them into their home. So, Pavensi began the effort of caring for them

However, as she cared for them, she realized that she needed to prepare them for life by ensuring their education and providing life-skills training. She began a ministry to them and through them called the "He is Faithful Ministry"

The idea of He is Faithful is to train young people to go into the rural villages and work among other disadvantaged children and orphans by tutoring them and sharing the Gospel. Their goal is to share the Gospel of Christ through the door of compassionate social ministry.

So, Pavensi began training them. She converted the garage to a chicken coup and started an egg and fryer buisiness. The money began to support the orphan's care and provide for resources. Then, TEAM sent Karen DuBert to further train the young people in refining English, public speaking, and teaching skills.

The orphans in Pavensi's home each have a personal faith in Christ. They have hopes and dreams for their own employment. But they also have a desire to share their hope with others. They will be going to rural areas soon to begin a ministry with orphans. Many of these rural orphans are in "child led homes" without a future. These homes are in crisis. As children head the homes, they have to take care of their siblings and have no time for school or English. English is required by the universities. Without further tutoring, these children have no hope of success or hope of hearing about Christ.

He is Faithful desires to "raise up God-fearing children out of the orphan community." They desire to "catch them young for God." They want "to touch and change the world by teaching and encouraging children in Christ."

So here is Pavensi's work. She read the Bible and saw that to care for the widow and orphan is true religion. She took the orphans into her home not only to care for them, but to raise them up for God. She then began equipping them for life and for ministry. These orphans are now articulate young adults and beginning the work of helping other orphans.

Pretty amazing! But, God can use you too. Are you willing? Begin to pray and ask him to show you.

Pavensi said at the end of our talk, "I don't know how this is going to work out, but we are going to take the first step."

That is faith in action.

First Aid 4 AIDS - Reach4Life

Reach4Life is an HIV training program in the local schools that utilizes the New Testament. The New Testament training book was designed and launched in 2004. The little orange book, which has since become a global icon in HIV prevention, contains the whole New Testament plus 265 pages of material geared at revolutionizing young people’s sexual attitudes. The ultimate message of Reach4Life is a gospel message; producing safe lifestyle parameters by means of changed lives, calling young people to a relationship with Christ. This new relationship with Jesus Christ will sustain their commitment to chastity, and provide a solid foundation for wise lifestyle choices. Governments and school systems have requested this discipleship ministry to enter the public schools.

Olen Johnsen of our team from the East Troy Bible Church writes his observations of the Reach 4 Life Ministry.

Reach for Life - The Choice is Yours is a combination curriculum to fight against HIV/AIDS. The book includes the New Testament and a 4 part curriculum. At the beginning the reader is encouraged to think about a revolution. There are two revolutions. A sexual revolution and a spiritual revolution. The sexual revolution is the call to understanding sex within the bounds of marriage, and away from the suicidal sex that permeates the world today. The spiritual revolution calls people to understand the value of life in Christ.

The book was developed in partnership with International Bible Society. It has since become more than a Bible giveaway, but whole ministry of its own. Provinding classes in many venue's from church to school to home.

Prospective instructors are given a month long training class, then they are enabled to step out into their ministry area to teach Reach for Life. It has turned out to be a compelling way for the Word of God to be delivered all over the world. In most parts of the world the class is part of the public school curriculum on HIV/AIDS prevention.

Each book costs ten dollars. This puts the whole New Testament, a mentor, a church, and the lessons into the hands of a young person. The book is well written, relevant to modern youth culture, and accurate to God's truth.

Reach for Life is one of the tools that the ANESU Partnership is using to build relationships with Zimbabwe youth pastors,orphan homes and church leaders.

We have small groups already supporting Reach 4 Life in Zimbabwe. The Dark Reality: The life expectancy of a woman in

Zimbabwe is 33 years old.

What is AIDS?

ACQUIRED: That is, it is a disease that people get or catch. The virus is passed from person to person, often from mother to baby. An infected person gets or acquires the virus that causes AIDS from someone else who already has the virus.

IMMUNE: HIV attacks the immune system. The word “immune” speaks of protection or defense.

DEFICIENCY: There is a deficient, inadequate, or “less-than needed” response to all diseases by the immune system.

SYNDROME: Any syndrome is just a group of signs and symptoms. When a person has AIDS, there is a group of signs and symptoms that point to that fact.

A person on ARVs - antiretroviral drugs can live for many years. However, in Africa only about 5 ARVs out of about 12 products world-wide are effective. Apparently, this is because people in Africa are not consistent in their use of ARVs and many of the drugs are now ineffective.

When people die of AIDS - what does that mean?

AIDS is only a description of the syndrome related to HIV. A person infected with HIV usually dies of some other opportunistic disease. HIV weakens and destroys the immune system so that the body cannot resist other diseases such as Malaria, Tuberculosis, Pneumonia or any other life threatening illness - even viral induced cancers. Further, HIV/AIDS renders a person tired and weak so that they tend to neglect nutrition and hygiene. They no longer have the energy to work in their gardens and in their homes or live productively in society.

What are some of the keys to

living positively with HIV?

Support - people with HIV need medical support, but they also need the encouragement of their families. People with HIV need training and partnerships with other people living with HIV and from caregivers.

ARVs - people with HIV need good medication and medical attention to combat HIV and other opportunistic diseases.

Nutrition - people with HIV need to have good nutrition in their diet. Further, nursing infants need to have supplemental milk from another source than their mother.

Attitude - people with HIV need to have a good outlook on life.

Transparency - all HIV carriers need to be open and transparent for any of the solutions above to be effective. Today, there is still much stigma about carrying HIV and still much bad information. In short, people live negatively and live in denial about HIV. This prevents them from getting good treatment, it allows them to potentially spread the infection, and prevents them from getting good spiritual, physical and emotional council.

What can the church do?

The church is strategically positioned to assist families and individuals in every area of their lives. More importantly, the church can introduce a person to Jesus Christ who transforms them from the inside out and gives them a purpose for living positively. This blog is dedicated to the churches who are in the battle. It is exciting to see individuals ignite the church in Zimbabwe to offer real help. These churches are offering help for the physical crisis of today but also offering help for HIV of the soul - which is more deadly than any other form of HIV.

Bud and Mandy have a heart to minister to people with HIV in Africa. But what is HIV? Is it a Homosexual disease? Why do children have HIV in Africa?

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the pathogen that causes AIDS. In this short clip, three of scientists discuss how HIV infection occurs, how the virus attacks the immune system, and how it replicates within white blood cells. HIV: Belongs to a group of viruses called retroviruses. There are several types (varieties) of HIV. There are many types of the virus found in different areas of the world, especially in different areas of Africa. If you are infected with any type of HIV, and you are not treated with antiretroviral drugs, you will almost certainly develop AIDS and die within two to fourteen years. If you get good medical care and take antiretroviral drugs properly, you may live longer but will likely die of AIDS in the end.

HUMAN: The virus is only found in humans. It is not found in animals or insects.

IMMUNODEFICIENCY: The virus reduces the defense power of the immune system. The immune system has the job of protecting the body from all kinds of infections and invaders. It destroys harmful microbes that enter the body.

VIRUS: A virus is a microbe too small to see with a regular light microscope. Viruses are the smallest of all micro-organism, hundreds of times smaller than a bacteria or malaria parasite.

How does someone get HIV?

HIV is spread most often through sexual behavior in Africa. In the US it is considered a homosexual disease or a disease of IV drug users. But in Africa, HIV is largely a heterosexual disease. Sub-Saharan Africa has a low IV drug use rate. Instead, HIV is spread through sexual promiscuity. The promiscuous husband brings the HIV back into the family and infects his wife or wives. The women carry the disease and then spread HIV to their children through delivery and nursing. One of the greatest 1st steps in eradication of the disease is through testing for HIV. If a person is tested, they will be more likely to think more carefully about sexual contact and more likely to change their behavior. In Zimbabwe, testing is a priority for all people, even children.

Cents and Sensibility - Rafiki Girls Center

One of the needs in Zimbabwe is skills training for disadvantaged children. Children on the streets with no skills will more likely be used, abused and pursue crime to survive. Children with skills will have a new sense of worth and will have something to offer a supply and demand market. Further, children who are invited to know Christ while at the same time learning skills will become a happy and productive part of culture.

Bud and Mandy are working to establish relationships with organizations that are preforming this kind of service to disadvantaged children. These organizations give spiritual promise and economic hope to children. Today, Karen Sautbine from East Troy Bible Church shares her story about the Rafiki Girls Center at Central Baptist Church in Harare. This program is a perfect example of how Christian individuals and churches are meeting the need of disadvantaged children in Zimbabwe.

Imagine not being able to go to high school because you could not afford the tuition, or didn't score well enough on the entrance exam for high school. What would you do? How would you earn money? How would you feel about yourself? Would you feel lonely or unworthy?

The Central Baptist Church in Harare provides an answer for girls who are trying to learn skills. The Rafiki Girls Center provides skills training for impoverished girls from 17 - 25 years of age. The school is located in the upper floor of the church. Twenty six girls are selected for a nine month program. They learn basic life-skills for the first three months and then spend six months learning a marketable skill. The skills taught at this school are catering, sewing, computer skills and home furnishing design. These girls are then able to be employed, seek further education or start their own business.

The Rafiki Girls Center builds relationships with these young ladies by encouraging them, and assisting them to improve their lives. The teachers use this opportunity to share the Gospel and disciple the girls in Christ. They provide mentorship, follow-up and accountability for the girls. The school has united tools, equipment, mentorship and discipleship into one program that equips the girls to live and succeed.

I loved the eagerness and smiles on the faces of the students. They grinned proudly as they showed us the items they had created. They protrayed a sense of hope and future.

Please pray for these girls and this mentorship ministry. The Rafiki Girls Center needs tools, supplies and equipment. Further, pray that the girls can find employment and relationship opportunities after graduation.

What was a Sign of the Messiah?

We have a lot of perceptions about Jesus and His ministry. We have done much to define, capture and understand Him. The Life of Jesus is like a multi-faceted diamond. His life can be examined from different angles and new things can be understood and learned.

However, the life and ministry of Jesus had some specific aspects. One of the many reason's Jesus became incarnate and walked this earth, was to define God's values for the Kingdom of Heaven. The Kingdom of Heaven as introduced by Jesus is very different from the kingdom of this earth.

Isaiah 61describes the King of the Kingdom and His work

61 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,

because the Lord has anointed me

to bring good news to the poor;

he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,

to proclaim liberty to the captives,

and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

² to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor,

and the day of vengeance of our God;

to comfort all who mourn;

³ to grant to those who mourn in Zion—

to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,

the oil of gladness instead of mourning,

the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;

that they may be called oaks of righteousness,

the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.

⁴ They shall build up the ancient ruins;

they shall raise up the former devastations;

they shall repair the ruined cities,

the devastations of many generations.

Jesus walked into His home town of Nazareth and went to His synagogue on the day this passage was to be read. Jesus was invited to read the text. It is found in Luke 4:14.

¹⁴ And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. ¹⁵ And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

¹⁶ And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. ¹⁷ And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

¹⁸ “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

because he has anointed me

to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives

and recovering of sight to the blind,

to set at liberty those who are oppressed,

¹⁹ to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

²⁰ And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. ²¹ And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

Jesus saw Himself as the fulfillment of Isaiah 61. It is interesting that these verses describe God's Messiah as being a King of justice, truth and compassion. The character traits of the Kingdom of Heaven are marked by the character of the King.

John the Baptist was eventually imprisoned. As he awaited his doom, it seems he was captured by doubt. In his anxiety, he sent and asked Jesus for evidence that Jesus was truly the King of Isaiah's prophecy.

Jesus responded in Matthew 11

² Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples ³ and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” ⁴ And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: ⁵ the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. ⁶ And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”

Jesus could have responded in so many different ways to John's question. But Jesus had begun a ministry to Israel to demonstrate the King and the Kingdom of Heaven. He gave John the answer that soothed John's mind. Jesus was the King and His teaching was marked with justice, compassion and truth.

If we are followers of this King, then as we wait for the fulfillment of His kingdom, should we not also walk in His ways? We may not be able to do signs and wonders, but Jesus will perform justice, compassion and truth in us as we serve Him.

The question is, how will the world around us understand what the Kingdom of Heaven is like and be attracted to the God of the universe if we aren't active in demonstrating Christ and discipling people?

As we begin the tour of Bud and Mandy's ministry, you will see that this is not a humanitarian mission. Instead Bud and Mandy are developing a little slice of heaven on earth. As people taste and see the Lord is good, they will find His truth is just, compassionate and full of hope. They will crave for the good food of God's Word and be healed in their souls.

One of the Scriptures God used to show me what He values is Isaiah 58. If you haven't read it for awhile, read it again. The question is - are these just words on a page or do they reveal the heart of God for His people? Yes, they were written thousands of years ago, but God's heart never changes. If you read these words, be prepared to apply them. Ask God to show you how to obey and ask Him to give you His heart.

Dear Friends,

If you are a regular reader of this blog, then we share a few things in common. Likely, we share a friendship with Bud and Mandy Jackson and are very interested in their ministry. I am sure that we also share a common love for people, an interest in HIV/AIDS, a love for orphans and widows, and we are probably very interested in God's response to this world of His.

Buddy sharing his heart

Buddy has invited me to periodically post glimpses into the world in which he ministers. As a pastor who was convicted by Scripture to become involved in the things that God values, I took a trip with seven others in March of 2011 to Zimbabwe. Our team from East Troy Bible Church, the Chapel in Marlboro and Antioch Evangelical Free Church saw first hand the ministry, the people and the heart of Bud and Mandy's mission in Zimbabwe.

Maybe these entries will give you a deeper appreciation for Bud and Mandy's journey of ministry. But more importantly, will encourage you to do more than read a blog. Hopefully, you too will visit Zimbabwe and see for yourself all the good things God is doing within the devastation of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Zimbabwe. Hopefully, you will pray more earnestly for Bud and Mandy. Certainly, you will be convicted as I was to be involved in acting positively for the cause of the orphan and the widow.

Please pray for the Jacksons. Mandy will be travelling on the 9th of April (her birthday) back to Zimbabwe. Pray that her travel is safe, the packing gets done, the last minute details accomplished and for a good reunion with Bud!

"Rising to The Challenge From an Agricultural Point of View"

ANESU is grateful for the excellent working relationship already in place with Foundations for Farming. This is an agriculturally based response initiative that shares the vision ANESU has of engaging the Church in Zimbabwe in a redemptive response in answer to the felt need of marginalized and disenfranchised Zimbabweans.

Brian Oldrieve, the founding director of Foundations for Farming is a long-time friend of ANESU’s director, Bud Jackson. Both Brian and Bud worked together in a church planting context in the 1990’s, at a time when Brian was a leading Christian commercial farmer in a community where a new church was being formed.

Clearly, God has used this authentic servant of His in a powerful way thus far. God continues to bless the vision that he gave to Brian some years ago. This is especially evident in the aftermath of a recent call to prayer that was initiated in Zimbabwe through the auspices of Trumpet Call for Transformation, a partnership between the Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe and Foundations for Farming.

Since then even a number of government departments have indicated a desire for Foundations for Farming to be included in their agenda.

Clearly, God is at work in this nation.

Please watch and listen to this interview, and hear the testimony of this remarkable servant of Christ as he shares his vision for Zimbabwe.

ANESU team member, Julie Vanzevern, is engaged with Foundation for Farming in a medical and natural medicinal herb-based response. The expansion and broader application of this program is part of the on-going strategy of ANESU in Zimbabwe.

The ANESU Partnership in Zimbabwe stands solidly behind these official statements that came out of the recently released “Cape Town Commitment”. The document is a product of the Lausanne Conference on World Evangelism in Cape Town, South Africa in October 2010.

HIV-AIDS is a major crisis in many nations. Millions are infected with HIV, including many in our churches, and millions of children are orphaned by AIDS. God is calling us to show his deep love and compassion to all those infected and affected and to make every effort to save lives. We believe that the teachings and example of Jesus, as well as the transforming power of his cross and resurrection, are central to the holistic gospel response to HIV-AIDS that our world so urgently needs.

We long that all pastors should set an example of sexual chastity and faithfulness, as Paul commanded, and teach clearly and often that marriage is the exclusive place for sexual union. This is needed not only because it is the clear teaching of the Bible, but also because the prevalence of multiple sexual partnerships outside marriage is a major factor in the rapid spread of HIV-AIDS in the most affected countries.

We reject and denounce all condemnation, hostility, stigma, and discrimination against those with HIV-AIDS. Such things are a sin and a disgrace within the body of Christ. All of us have sinned and fallen short of God's glory; we have been saved only by grace, and we should be slow to judge, quick to restore and forgive. We also recognize with grief and compassion that very many people who contract HIV-AIDS do so through no fault of their own, and often through caring for others.

Let us, as the Church worldwide, rise to this challenge in the name of Christ and in the power of the Holy Spirit. Let us stand together with our brothers and sisters in areas hardest hit by HIV- AIDS, through practical support, compassionate care (including care of widows and orphans), social and political advocacy, education programmes (particularly those that empower women), and effective prevention strategies appropriate to the local context. We commit ourselves to such urgent and prophetic action as part of the integral mission of the Church.

Let's rise above the malaise of compassion fatigue and give a thought to the 35 million people who are living with HIV/AIDS today worldwide.

Statistics vary because so many population groups, particularly in Southern Africa, live in areas where stigma keeps many silent and where no accurate records are kept. Please take any statistic you read as a conservative estimate of the horrible reality.

As you notice the levelling off in the increase factor in some instances, remember the tragic damage to families (particularly children) and communities that's been left behind.

An estimated 23 million people died of AIDS between 1990 and 2007. In 2007 alone, more than 2 million people died from AIDS-related causes.

"Discipling for Development"

Discipling for Development is a key focus of the ministry of The Navigators in the African countries where they work (Burkina Faso, Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda and Uganda. The Navigators has no work in Zimbabwe).

Discipling for Development is a strategy The Navigators utilizes to impact poor, rural communities with a holistic Gospel.

Edward Mupada, Uganda country director for The Navigators, has said, “… I realized that we were on a new and exciting dispensation in the advancement of the Gospel. But how could we be relevant in a situation where unemployment levels are over 40% and many live in abject poverty?

“In November 2007 I attended the Discipling for Development training in Mbale, Uganda. I saw rural communities being transformed by the Gospel and livelihoods of people improving as they used local resources. The poor are given life skills and the Gospel is flowing freely through relational networks, impacting families and neighboring communities. I praise God for a new approach in discipleship that helps us reach the whole person and whole communities!”

The main focus of the work is among the rural poor in Africa. In countries where the church is well established, the Discipling for Development team enters into partnerships with in-country organizations that share our vision and commitment. They call these partnerships Discipling for Development mentoring projects. In these situations our mentors don’t live in the country where the training takes place; instead, they travel to the country about three times a year to train and coach indigenous missionaries and pastors. In countries (or people groups) where the church isn’t adequately established, The Navigators sends mentors to live among the people and implement the Discipling for Development process.

This approach is in line with the vision and strategy of the Zimbabwe ANESU Partnership. We invite you to watch this video clip, “What is Africa Yearning For?”, and rejoice in the good work being done through The Navigators in Africa, and pray that we too, might be effective in assisting the Church in Zimbabwe to meet the challenge Zimbabwe’s people face.

We believe that our relationship with Foundations in Farming (http://www.foundationsforfarming.org/) will greatly enhance this strategy, as we bring it to bear in Zimbabwe.

The Church is people, not buildings and programs. The Church is God's people, dedicated to giving themselves to being God's hands and feet in a hurt and wounded world. TEAM's HIV/AIDS initiative is comprised of two main strategic church-based components. The ZITA Alliance is representative of the household of faith in North America ... local congregations or individual Christ followers who feel compelled to have a part in today's HIV/AIDS response. The ANESU Partnership is representative of front-line local-church based national initiatives and locally based global responses in Zimbabwe. This fellowship of people in Zimbabwe is working toward an ever more intentionally harmonized response to the human need caused by the human predicament of which poverty and HIV/AIDS is central.

This is a repeat post for those who may have missed it the forst time around.

In February, 2009, Hans Rosling explained the HIV/AIDS pandemic with the aid of fabulous new shifting graphics.

He has converted the best available data from UNAIDS and WHO into understandable Gapminder bubbles.

While the statistics are difficult to accurately quantify in some areas of the world, especially sub Saharan Africa, this does illustrate the reality as we know it.

The two key messages that the global HIV epidemic has reached a “steady state” with 1% of the adult world population infected and that there are huge differences in HIV occurrence between and within African countries.

Many African countries have the same, relatively low, HIV levels as can be found in most of the world, whereas 50% of the world’s HIV infected persons live in a few countries in Eastern and Southern Africa (with 4% of the world population).

You will notice that Zimbabwe’s HIV rate of infection soared at one stage, but has been reduced quite dramatically in recent years. While the rate of infection is still alarmingly high, we would suggest that one of the key factors in the turn-around had to do with government’s shift in policy that went from denying the existence of HIV to recognizing its reality and beginning to allow something to be done about it.

Hans Rosling closes his speech by summarizing probable reasons for the high HIV burden in parts of Eastern and Southern Africa and he claims that the focus must be on preventing further HIV transmission in these highly affected populations.

"Please Remember The Children"

Journalist Fidelis Zvomuya, of Inter Service News Agency (http://allafrica.com/stories/201007280006.html), recently wrote, “According to UNAIDS, Zimbabwe has over 1,3 million AIDS orphans. About 100,000 of them live on their own while others live with their extended families.

It estimates that between 110,000 and 140,000 children aged between 0 to 14 years are living with HIV - who mostly live in rural areas.

And the country does not have enough antiretroviral (ARV) drugs to comply with World Health Organisation recommendations on providing treatment to people with HIV. According to Dr Tapuwa Magure, CEO of the Zimbabwe National AIDS Council, the number of Zimbabweans in need of ARVs has increased to 570,000 from 350,000.”

“Currently about 200,000 people whose immune systems have been severely weakened are on ARVs. This number includes children”, Magure said.

“But Tanya Weaver of the American Foundation for Children with AIDS, said Zimbabwe receives little HIV/AIDS funding support from any of the major donor initiatives. The country receives approximately four dollars per HIV-positive person per year.”

“In contrast, neighbouring Zambia, which has a similar rate of HIV prevalence, receives around 187 dollars per HIV-positive person annually from foreign donors,” states Weaver.”

Zvomuya quoted a medical doctor at Guruve Hospital who said, “In most rural areas, children with AIDS are generally considered a lost cause.

Treatment, to the extent it exists, is limited to adults, for whom antiretroviral therapy is cheaper and easier.

Specialized and costly tests are needed to determine whether a child under 18 months is infected, although treatment can begin based on symptoms alone.

Children are also more complicated to treat, partly because their medication must be constantly adjusted as their height and weight change. And paediatric drugs cost more than adult medication until recently, up to three times as much.

The doctor added, Half of all untreated HIV-positive infants die before the age of two for lack of medication that can produce transformations seemingly overnight.”

These are some of the realities of the situation responders in Zimbabwe are dealing with.

The challenge is multi-tiered and so must the response be. We are doing what our partners equip us to do by means of a Home Based Care program operating out of a hospital in the rural Northeast of Zimbabwe.

Our vision is to broaden that response into other affected areas of the country.

One of the ways that will be accomplished will be by means of networking and strategic partnerships with sister HIV/AIDS response initiatives presently underway within Zimbabwe.

Internationally, one of the most vital components to response expansion will be the ZITA Alliance that is being formed in North America.

"From The Heart of a Pastor"

The ZITA Alliance is a gathering of representatives from the North American household of faith who feel compelled to join forces with the Zimbabwean Church in the fight against the human predicament that is exacerbating the impact of HIV/AIDS.

We are profoundly grateful for the pastors who have caught the vision and are challenging men and women of God toward sensitivity to the heart beat of God, so that they will hear the voice of God when He whispers, "I need you to be part of this ..."

Please read this prayerfully, and consider the role God would have you fill as we respond to the challenge He places before us. It is something a ZITA Alliance pastor shared with a team of individuals from the congregation he serves, who are contemplating being part of a trip to Zimbabwe early next year.

"This vision trip is a pro-active step to peel back the insulation from the wires of our faith and connect us with the power of God's vision for the nations.

You may or may not be affected by the HIV crisis in Zimbabwe, but if you go on this trip, you will return changed. We live such protected and insulated lives in our communities in America. To really grasp the purposes of God for our lives, we need to make conscious and energtic steps to expose ourselves to the pain and suffering of this world. Honestly, this trip is more about your walk with God than it is about the millions of Africans dying with HIV.

HIV is an agent that focuses the intensity of the curse on mankind. Just as the earthquake focused the intensity of the curse upon Haiti. But after the devastation of the curse, what remains is the beautiful image of the body of Christ.

The polished and materialistic wrapper of religion is removed and the living, breathing, active people of God empowered by His Spirit remain to bring glory, honor and praise to the name of Jesus Christ.

There is a frantic global effort to address HIV AIDS. But any efforts to erradicate AIDS will only prolong the inevitable - death - not just death but spiritual death - separation from the Life Giver. ARVs, money, orphanages, nutrition are all an effort to bring a slice of heaven to earth so that people will want to join God in His kingdom. If they never experience a little heaven in the middle of the curse, they will never thirst for heaven, but instead some other vain thing or idol.

Our job is to get back down to the level of the curse and look at it, see it, smell it, taste it and grieve over it. In the midst of the grief, we can bring the glory and hope of Jesus Christ by caring, listening and comforting. We bear the image of God. We bear His Word. We bear the Spirit of God. We bear the hope of Eternity. We bear the name above all names - Jesus Christ. We are His ambassadors, His priesthood, His body, His bride, His family, His rulers, His hands and His voice.

This trip will scrape the scab off of our hardened hearts and help expose us to the groaning creation as it waits for the redemption of Christ."

We will be hosting vision trips on the part of two churches in January and March of 2011. God is raising up individuals with specific professional and individual gifting that we so desperately need for the counsel they will be able to offer us. More importantly these people will be going with a right heart, committed to finding the real pulse of the Zimbabwean reality.

Each of these individuals is as much a part of the team as is any individual on the front lines.

"The Real Answer to Poverty"

It is gratifying to place some unobtainable thing in an open outstretched hand, but is that what addressing poverty means?

The nature, or symptom of poverty can be addressed externally by the giving of what a person lacks, but the cause of poverty runs at a much deeper level.

To the extent that projects transform situations, they do so at an external, unsustainable level.

Something else, something much more fundamental, something much more basic to real human need is required to bring real, long lasting, systemic transformation on the inside … at the heart of who a person really is, where the spring of well being is found.

Dr Myers, interviewed here, says the answer is found in transformed relationships. A transformed relationship with God and one’s personal situation, transformed relationships within community, with those called “others,” with the environment, and with one’s self will transform a person.

That transformation will result in an outcome that does not need much money at all to get something successful going, because a person so transformed becomes an active participant rather than a passive recipient.

That person begins to act out his role as a person with something to contribute, working for change, instead of sitting passively hoping to be given something for nothing or by being found in the grip of some kind of fatalism.

Dr. Myers makes the point that “Projects don’t transform people. People transform people. It is relationships that are transformational.”

The more we learn about HIV/AIDS, the more we realize how much is still to be learned about the virus and the ultimate breakdown of the body’s immune system it triggers.

We also hear of things that seem to make sense on the surface, but perhaps need closer and possibly more scientific investigation to understand more completely.

When we were in Kenya in 2008, we visited an infant orphanage. We saw and held a healthy looking baby that had been rescued, after having been abandoned in a toilet immediately after birth. We were told that the infant tested HIV positive, but it’s HIV status had been reversed with nothing more than tender loving care and healthy nutrition. We were told that there is a window of opportunity in the case of infants born HIV positive where the infection can be reversed by this means alone.

We have tried to seek further confirmation of this, and have struggled to reconcile what we saw and heard with what we learn about HIV infection and detection. The following quote was helpful in this regard.

“When a new baby is born to an HIV-infected mother, there is no immediate way to know whether the baby is infected with the virus. This is because if the mother is infected, an ELISA test (which checks for HIV antibodies in the blood) will almost always be positive, too. Babies will have their HIV-infected mother's antibodies (which are passed to the baby through the placenta) even if they are not truly infected with HIV. These babies may remain HIV-antibody-positive for up to 18 months after birth, even if they are not actually infected.

Infants who are not actually infected with the virus (but are born to HIV-positive mothers) will not make their own antibodies; the HIV antibodies that came from their mothers will gradually disappear from their blood before they reach 2 years of age. Any blood tests performed after this point will likely be HIV-negative. Infants who are infected with HIV from their mothers will begin to make their own HIV antibodies and will generally remain HIV-positive after 18 months of age.

The most accurate diagnosis of HIV infection in early infancy comes from tests that show the presence of the virus itself (not HIV antibodies) in the body. These tests include an HIV viral culture and PCR (polymerase chain reaction), a blood test that looks for the DNA of the virus.

Older kids, teens, and adults are tested for HIV infection by an ELISA test to detect the presence of HIV antibodies in the blood. Antibodies are specific proteins that the body produces to fight infections; HIV-specific antibodies are produced in response to infection with HIV. Someone with antibodies against HIV is said to be HIV-positive. If the ELISA test is positive, it is always confirmed by another test called a Western blot. If both of these tests are positive, the patient is almost certainly infected with HIV.”

What we can say without fear of contradiction, is that loving tender care of infants and young children, coupled with a steady diet of healthy food, does make a world of difference. That's good enough motive for us to lavish love on them and work towards providing them with what they need.

The Apostle Paul spoke of being compelled by the love of God. God's love for us, compels us to demonstrate God's love to children at risk and people infected, affected and at risk by HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe. We are grateful for our global partners who are joining hands and hearts with us in Jesus' name.

With the previous U.S. presidential administration’s plan, PEPFAR, coming under negative scrutiny, funds for Anti Retroviral Drugs (ARV’s) are beginning to run short. This shortage hi-lights the significance of alternative efforts at ARV funding.

The HBO documentary, The Lazarus Effect, is good news if the money being raised is actually getting to the people who need it.

If what Damisa Moyo says in her book, Dead Aid, is right, massive amounts of foreign aid flowing into Africa are not reaching their intended target. Most is being misappropriated and almost as much is ending up in private Swiss bank accounts.

In his article, “At Front Lines, AIDS War Is Falling Apart,” Donald G. McNeil Jr. of the New York Times, wrote, “The last decade has been what some doctors call a ‘golden window’ for treatment. Drugs that once cost $12,000 a year fell to less than $100, and the world was willing to pay.

In Uganda, where fewer than 10,000 were on drugs a decade ago, nearly 200,000 now are, largely as a result of American generosity. But the golden window is closing.

Uganda is the first country where major clinics routinely turn people away, but it will not be the last. In Kenya next door, grants to keep 200,000 on drugs will expire soon. An American-run program in Mozambique has been told to stop opening clinics. There have been drug shortages in Nigeria and Swaziland. Tanzania and Botswana are trimming treatment slots, according to a report by the medical charity Doctors Without Borders.”

Two main factors are contributing to this crisis:

With so much money being spent on other things by wealthy nations, (three trillion dollars on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, for instance) the first is tragic enough. It has to do with the effect on traditional donors triggered by the global recession.

The second contributing factor is even more tragic. There is a growing sense, lead by key components of the present USA administration, that more lives will be saved by fighting other, cheaper diseases.

As DONALD G. McNEIL Jr. points out, “Even as the number of people infected by AIDS grows by a million a year, money for treatment has stopped growing.”

McNeil goes on to report, “Under its new Global Health Initiative, the Obama administration has announced plans to shift its focus to mother-and-child health. The AIDS budget was increased by only 2 percent.

The British government and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation also said they would focus support on mother-child health.

‘The political winds have changed,’ said Sharonann Lynch, chief author of the Doctors Without Borders report. ‘And I don’t believe for a minute it’s just the economic downturn. I think world leaders feel the heat is off and they’re fatigued’.”

Dr. Natasha Astill is a British AIDS specialist working at a remote hospital in Uganda.

She is quoted as saying, “It makes me angry. It feels horrible. Sometimes you wonder if you’re doing people favors. You start them on drugs, you give them hope, and then you’re not sure you can keep it up. We all knew these drugs are for life.” (Mc Neil’s article refers)

No completely adequate alternative to modern ARV’s is available, but we are taking every opportunity to investigate and deploy whatever comes to hand.

We’ve discovered that a combination of a powder made from the leaves of what is known as the Miracle Tree, when combined with daily ingestion of a relatively inexpensive antibiotic, is proving effective in combating the effects of HIV.

Moringa powder provides 69% protein, 3 times as much iron as found in spinach, 4 times the vitamin ‘A’ (beta carotene) found in carrots, 4 times the calcium in milk, 2 times the protein found in milk, 3 times the potassium found in bananas, 7 times the vitamin ‘C’ found in oranges, it has 18 amino acids, including the 8 essential amino acids necessary for the body’s survival but which the body cannot synthesize itself. Moringa also has plenty of omega 3 oils and chlorophyll (which changes acids into alkaline), plus 46 compounds that have antioxidant properties. Moringa can help reduce bad cholesterol and triglycerides, help control blood sugar, and has 36 properties with anti-inflammatory substances, many of which are anti-cancer agents.

Co-trimoxazole (trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole) is a widely available, low-cost antibiotic that’s used in developing countries with limited resources to treat and prevent common infections. In HIV infection, it’s highly effective for treating and preventing against pneumonia and Isospora belli – a human intestinal disease as well as bacterial infections. The antibiotic has anti-malarial properties and also reduced the occurrence of malaria by 26 per cent.
As critical as treatment is, encouraging the decline in new infections is even more important. By the same token, the present up-surge in new infections is something we cannot ignore.
The ABC approach pioneered in Uganda has come under the influence of Western thinking to the point where recent gains in combating new infections are being reversed.
Uganda was "winning the war." They were in the vanguard of meaningful response that was led by the president and his wife. That response put a high premium on abstinence, and had a significant impact in the numbers of new infections.

A significant global shift is underway, however, that is being driven by the wonderful sounding catch-phrase, "Human Rights," but behind the shift is concerted activism from the women's rights and gay rights communities in the West. They argue that the approach in Africa was patriarchal, and stepped on the rights of individuals to express their sexual freedoms the way they wanted to.

Amazingly, the Western view is impacting the global response to the predicament in the global South in a way that is actually reversing the gains that have been made and plunging Africa's people back into a desperate situation.

Miss HIV, an excellent documentary put out by Ethnographic Media (EGM) speaks well to this issue.

Edward C.Green, PH.D. (Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies) said, “We have a different kind of epidemic in the United States. HIV cases are mostly concentrated among a few high-risk groups, but in Africa, most HIV is found in the general population.

Western ideology for AIDS took center stage in 1986, when the World Health Organization established a special program headed by Jonathan Mann, M.D., MPH. He believed the tragedy of AIDS brought with it an historic opportunity. Knowing how AIDS had brought more discrimination for gays in the United States, he successfully placed the struggle of discrimination into the foundation of global AIDS policies. And in 1992, the World Health Assembly resolved that ‘There is no public rationale for any measures that limit the rights of individuals'.”

Edward Green went on to say, "Not only is there a general indictment that we have violated trust and betrayed the people of the third world by letting our ideology get in the way, but we’ve pushed Uganda away from the model that’s worked so well. If you go to Uganda today, the emphasis is on drugs, it’s on condoms, testing … the old ABC program that put real emphasis on A & B, that involved the church, went into the schools ... it’s been largely dismantled.

The evidence is there, that we donors from the major Western agencies have been pushing Uganda in the direction of conforming with the model that we’re using everywhere else."

Edward C.Green, quoted Dr. Graham Stoneburner, who worked for the World Health organization and he immersed in the Uganda data, when he said, "History will look back on this period and say that one of the great abuses of the latter part of the twentieth century was the failure to do AIDS prevention in ways we know are affective."

Dr. Martin Ssempa Makerere (Pastor of the Community Church in Kampala and leader of “PrimeTime”, a Ugandan ministry to young adults, encouraging abstinence and marital faithfulness):

“It’s become, all about human rights … ‘My rights!’ "My right to have sex any time I want!" "It’s become a battle for the rights of the homo-sexual community ... for women’s emancipation.”

An encouraging word is that Dr Martin Piot (UNAIDS Executive Director Under Secretary General of the Unites Nations) has said, "If we don’t increase our investment in prevention, how can the world afford … from a humane perspective, from a moral perspective, from a financial and economic perspective , that every year between 4 and 5 million will become infected?"

A greater principle, however, drives those of us in the forefront of TEAM's response. It is this greater holistic principle that brings us to believe so strongly in a balanced approach to the problem that understands women's rights more in the context of sexual abuse than in terms of sexual freedom and, when confronted with gay rights activist philosophy, understands sexual rights in terms of sexual responsibility. It is a principle that recognizes that the Church has a responsibility toward those infected and affected, and must stand against stigma and discrimination and be a clear advocate both to the Church and of the Church on behalf of those caught up in the grip of the problem .

This balance is also extended in terms of realizing the pre-eminence of Biblical life transformation and life style choices that people take at the heart level. This protects these people from infection. Without a doubt, we will see that as number one priority, not just for "moral" or "spiritual" reasons, but because statistics have proven beyond doubt that it is the ONLY approach to fighting the battle that has any hope of halting AIDS in it's tracks.

ARV's are great, when available, and the ZITA Alliance will no doubt want to address the importance of stepping up to the plate to resource funding for them. But we also do what we can in the meantime, and are serious about getting HIV positive people on a the bi-part regimen of antibiotics and Moringa powder. This is proving to be very effective in keeping the CD4 count low in HIV sufferers. This, coupled with good nutrition, is where we are in many respects in our Africa response.

It really is time for the global Church to stand up and be counted. We are moved to respond out of a humble moral authority that is rooted and grounded in a heart motivation and heart conviction. This is becoming increasingly necessary for addressing issues that are dictating to the ebb and flow of secular response ... and we are not alone, both in the vertical, as well as horizontal sense.

They've invited us to share the vision with them ... and possibly other interested church congregations in the region.

"Zimbabwe Alliance Summit"

April 24th is going to be a great day, as a group of representatives from a number of churches gather with the Zimbabwe Alliance Task Force in Wheaton, Illinois, to celebrate the leading of the Lord thus far and prayerfully consider strategic next steps.

An Alliance is a collaborative relationship among churches, groups and individuals who commit to resourcing the realization of a shared vision.

Alliances represent a broad collaboration among the North American evangelical community working in concert with TEAM and her partners to multiply the effectiveness of ministry projects. An effective alliance provides long-term sustainability to a ministry project by providing a wide range of resources and skills.

Alliances proactively serve as advocates for TEAM's worldwide ministry projects by communicating and resourcing the vision and strategy of the project. They communicate and coordinate with the on-site field leaders.

What happens at a summit to launch an alliance?

Members and representatives of the ministry project, including the steering committee, will present to the summit attendees updated reports on the status of the work. Everyone present will participate in a time of prayer to thank the Lord for the blessings reported and to align their hearts with His is regards to the needs of the project.

"When Helping Hurts"

In the world of global compassionate response, there's a very fine line between "Helping" and "Hurting."

Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert's recent book, When Helping Hurts, is a must read for caring compassionate people who feel compelled to respond to profound human crises around the world.

In his editorial review, Joel Belz (founder of World Magazine) writes, "(Corbett and Fikkert) suggest that a comprehensively biblical worldview is essential to set things straight - a worldview that includes both individuals and systems.

In both cases - individual and systemic - the Fikkert-Corbett approach insists on dividing the process into three stages: (1) Relief, or the urgent and temporary provision of aid; (2) Rehabilitation, or the restoration of people and communities, after the 'bleeding' has stopped; and (3) Development, or the promotion of an empowering process alongside the people being helped.

'One of the biggest mistakes North American churches make - by far,' say the authors, "- is applying relief in situations where rehabilitation or development is the appropriate intervention'."

There is no way that statistics can tell the whole story ... especially in parts of the world where people not only live in isolated regions but are further isolated by a deeply ingrained disinclination to talk to anyone about things that are traditional taboo. In Africa, that disinclination is very real when it comes to HIV infection and speaking to the ravages of AIDS.

In spite of this, statistics still point .. at least ... in the direction of general trends. This seems to be the case when it comes to the numbers recently reported by the UNAids assessment of the global condition with regard to HIV/AIDS.

One very fascinating trend seems to suggest that HIV infection is no longer the death sentence it once was. Well-nourished people who are able to take ARV drugs every day can contemplate a happy and productive future. Documented cases prove that it is even possible to bring a CD4 count low enough to be able to produce HIV-free families.

That is all the more reason why we need to continue to work hard to destroy stigma and contribute to sustainable improvement of human nutrition and availability of affordable anti-retroviral drugs.

There is a lot to read and take in with regard to this UNAids report. You will notice, though, that while more people are living positively with HIV than ever before, the number of new infections is on the decline. We see that as good news.

As we interacted with other like-minded organizations and initiatives, we were encouraged to remember that we are part of a very large family, making a significant impact in reaching out to touch people where they hurt.

TEAM will be represented there this weekend, starting today (Friday, January 8th).

This is to alert you to something specific we'd like to ask you to pray with us about.

We have spoken in this Blog of the issue of collaboration.

Networking and the coordination of shared resources is an intentional component of our strategy both within Zimbabwe and in the Southern African region. We are also intentional about the involvement of other key global participants.

As momentum for the initiative increases in Zimbabwe, there is building momentum in North America as a small group of local congregations of Christ followers prayerfully consider the role they might have as part of this alliance.

An Alliance, by definition, is a collaborative relationship among churches, groups, and individuals who commit to resource the realization of a shared vision.

This is going to be much more than the kind of partnership where churches provide the money and the mission does the rest. The thing that excites us about the alliance concept is the fact that participants will share in every aspect of the ministry, from visioning and strategy formulation to hands-on engagement as time and finances allow.

We're wanting to tap into expertise represented by participating alliance members when it comes to practical issues like farming practices, clean water, child and women welfare and any number of other spiritual, social and/or medical issues that have to do with the crisis. Most of all, the main goal is a spiritual one, and will need discerning spiritual leadership on a number of levels ... including prayer and counsel with hurting Zimbabweans.

Global church-to-church cooperation with the Zimbabwean Church is what it's all about.

Please pray for already interested parties as they track through the discernment process.

Want to be a part? You are invited to prayerfully consider that possibility!

Our team will be engaging in intentional conversation in the new year with groups and individuals who have shown interest in participating in the Zimbabwe HIV/AIDS Alliance. Participation in the discussion will not commit anyone to actual involvement, but it will benefit interested parties by providing them with the kind of information necessary to contribute to a prayerful discernment process.

How Do The Numbers Compare?

We all know that Southern Africa is not the only region in the grip of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Even so-called "first world" nations have not escaped it.

Experts predict, for instance, that as the epidemic gains momentum in South East Asia it will make the impact felt by Africa pale into relative insignificance.

The global battle continues to rage, but positive reports continue to come in from some regions of the African continent. Some West Africa nations are case in point. Our people in Swaziland, for instance, report a significant shift in the numbers of recent years. This phenomenon is not reflected in the numbers below, because they represent the reality, as far as it could be assessed, by the end of 2007. We expect statistics presently in the making to show real progress.

Nevertheless, the statistics enumerated below reflect some of the points made above, and serve as an interesting point of comparison. One of the things the statistics point out is the degree of devastation the pandemic has caused among the senior sectors of African society as compared to North America. This reality is brought to bear at the level of the younger generations in Africa, particularly the adolescent generation.

Literacy rates are fairly similar, while life expectancy varies dramatically. This speaks of hope that the potential to hear and understand can bring. The time is right, the mechanics are in place, good things are being done, the positive potential is real ... we are encouraged. We're grateful for your encouragement and participation in the cause.

"From There to Here ..."

Many friends have asked us how it came about that we moved from the work focus we've been committed to for many years to something so different.

"From evangelism and church planting to humanitarian work" ... some have said.

This post is for friends and ministry partners who are interested to know the process by which we advanced from where we were to where we are.

It is no contradiction. It is obedience to an ever deepening conviction to complete the task.

We have just added a slideshow presentation to the Blog that will help you track with us across the terrain by which we have come, not to simply humanitarian work, but to action that is being motivated by a commitment to a genuine theology of compassion; mentoring and facilitating people in the pews to a practical response to the mandate Christ gave when He said "AS the Father has sent me, so send I you."
