We joined with friends and the congregation of the “River of Life” church on the outskirts of Harare to worship. This ministry is connected to a program called “Farming God’s Way.”
Many in the large crowd gathered there represented the very poor and marginalized in Zimbabwe, yet all joined in united and enthusiastic song. The African pastor spoke of the difference between “happiness” and “joy”. The crowd responded enthusiastically to his main point, that happiness is dependant on external circumstances whereas joy is dependant on that which is within, generated by the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. It was one thing to see people in very trying circumstances give loud agreement to the truth, but humbling to see the evidence of it in their lives as they came, then left to face the challenges of day to day existence under very challenging conditions.
